Summer 2011 Update: Nicaragua

Proud new trainees, GFH trainers and amazing support team from SOPPEXCCA and CECOCAFEN

Grounds for Health field staff in Nicaragua just completed a series of trainings of nine new doctors and nurses in the region of Jinotega. The trainings were located in the small towns of Wiwili and El Cua where there is a sizable membership of our partner cooperatives CECOCAFEN and SOPPEXCCA.

Over six days of clinical training, 284 women were screened for cervical cancer. La Fundación Española and the Ministry of Health in the department of Jinotega made a special training request to Grounds for Health to conduct these trainings. Four additional screening and treatment centers are now equipped with cryotherapy equipment AND they are fully trained. This expands cervical cancer prevention with visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and treatment with crotherapy to four additional municipalities in Jinotega Region.

This expansion of services creates the potential to reach many more rural women with cervical prevention services and directly supports the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health implements VIA and cryotherapy into existing health services.  Congratulations to the newly certified doctors and nurses of Jinotega and also GFH’s in-country Program Coordinator, Dra. Barinia Osejo and Program Assistant, Amanda Eastwood, MPH.

They say “a picture is worth a thousand words”…thank you for posting these pictures as I beam with joy of seeing that GFH continues to make a mark in Nicaragua to help educate healthcare providers on the screening for cervical cancer. It is great to see pictures of those individuals that I have come across during my volunteer gigs in Nica and see they are continuing to do the good work that we have trained them to do. Love to see those new healthcare providers hold up those certificates. One more person out there helping to make a difference. Rock on GFH!!
